Blood diamonds,also known as conflict diamonds,hot diamonds,war diamonds, are diamonds that are minned in a war zone,and sold to finance warlord's activities,insurgencies,invading armies ,rebels groups,terrorist groups,war activities etc.This usually happens in africa.countries that were mainly involved in blood diamonds were Sierra Leone,Angola,Liberia,Ivory coast,Democratic Republic of Congo

The international community such as the united nation set up an international body which oversees all diamond production,export,import etc.as a way to fight blood diamonds,they make sure that diamonds are conflict free,its known as the KIMBERELY PROCESS CERTIFICATION SCHEME.
It was introduced in 2003 by the united general assembly,to prevent these blood diamonds from entering the mainstream rough diamonds market,it was setup to assure consumers that by purchasing diamonds they were not financing war and human right abuse.the KPCS and the united nations have had a huge amount of succes since it was introduced in 2003, as at first 45% of diamonds traded were blood diamond and now 99% percent of diamonds traded are conflict free or are not blood diamonds.
